What are the difference between Search Engine and Directories?

A Search Engine is a programme that usually finds or searches for and recognizes different items in and from a database which corresponds to relevant and important keywords stated by the user and especially used for the purpose of searching the specific sites or blogs or forums or so forth on the WWW (World Wide Web). It is a system of software which is maintained and designed to recognize information on the World Wide Web.

On the other hand, Directory can be referred to computing directory, service directory, political directory, business directory, telephone directory and web directory. Generally a directory is used for the purpose of organizing information of a specific type in a particular form, for instance a telephone directory. But a web directory is a subject guide, commonly organized by huge topics and subtopics. For instance, Yahoo is one of the famous web directories in the world (http://www.yahoo.com).

An Introduction to Website or Web pages, Web portal and Directories

A website is also known as web site or often called site is a bunch of web pages generally work from a single web domain, where a web site or a site is hosted on a web server, at least one, reachable through a network like Internet or any private local area network (LAN), from end to end of an Internet address familiar with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). All reachable websites collectively comprised with the World Wide Web (www). A webpage is generally a document commonly written in a plain text distributed with formatting directions of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language). Web pages are retrieved and transferred with HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) to provide privacy for the purpose of user of the webpage content. A website’s pages can normally be retrieved from a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), generally called the web address.
Categories of Websites
Static Website
Generally there are two types of websites. One is Static website and the other is Dynamic website. A static website is one which has generally web pages keep in reserve in a format which is sent to a client web browser. These static web pages are generally coded in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are commonly used to manage and control the appearance of HTML. This kind of website generally shows the same information to all the visitors. Static websites normally show consistent level information for the purpose of long period of time.
Dynamic website
A dynamic website is one which can customizes or can changes at any time if required all the time. There are several softwares available for generating dynamic web sites, such as CGI, Java Servlets and Java Server Pages, Active Server Pages and ColdFusion. Many web application and web templates available for the purpose of using programming languages, such as PHP, Perl, Python etc. to build a rapid and dynamic website.
Web Portal
A web portal sometimes called a especial web page designed with several functions that brings information at the same time from different origins in a uniform way. Generally each of the sources of information gets its allocated place on the page for the purpose of displaying information; sometimes a user also can configure which one is to show. For instance of earlier public web portals AOL, Excite, Netvibes, iGoogle, MSN, Naver, Lycos, Indiatimes, Rediff and Yahoo!. Web portals are often differentiated as vertical and horizontal. A vertical portal is a special one which enters into the point to a specific market or interest.

Types of Web Portals

Web portals are often separated as horizontal and vertical portals. A horizontal portal is mainly used as a platform to different companies in the same economic sector or same kind of producers or distributors. On the other hand a vertical portal is one of the specialized entry points to a particular industry or subject area or demand.

Directory

Directory can be referred to computing directory, service directory, political directory, business directory, telephone directory and web directory. At present time many other sites have been using a yahoo-like web directory including major portal sites.

How do we search and What is PR (Page Rank)?

Now the question is how to use Google or Bing or Yahoo to search your desired website or blog? The first thing is that if you know the name of the site, I mean if you know the URL (Uniform Resource Locator)  or the name of the site, say my site name – yoga2all.com and you directly type the site name on the search engine, then you will find out the site. But if you do not know the site name but you wish to find a specific topics, for instance if you want to know something about Types of Breathing Exercise or Pranayama, then you must type these relevant keywords, say – pranayama types, types of pranayama, types of breathing exercise or breathing exercise types and so on

When you are typing your desired search term or keyword on the search engine, within a few seconds some of the high ranked websites or blogs will show on the results pages of your desktop or laptop computer screen.

Now click on your desired site you wish to see, as you have already seen a title of a site page or post and a small Meta description is written under each search result. Read the Meta description and go for that.

What is Page Rank?

Generally a PageRank is the number that Google assigns to each website and even each of the website pages within its index, on a scale of 0 to 10 in numbers, to show its algorithm’s calculated assessment of the overall essentiality of the site or blog and even how it would rank in a search results. Though it is not only a single algorithm used by the google to index websites and shows on its search engine results page but also the first algorithm that was used by Google and due to that it is well-known to all.

More clearly we can say that a PageRank results is a form of mathematical algorithm which is based on the webgraph invented by www (World Wide Web) pages as nodes and hyperlinks. The rank of a page or a website or blog depends upon the importance of a particular page. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. A page which has linked with many other important pages usually receives a high rank itself.

What is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

Optimization of Website
The full form of SEO is Search Engine Optimization. It is the procedure in getting visitors or traffics from the organic search or free search or editorial search or natural search results on all search engines. Almost all the major search engines, for instance Google, Bing and Yahoo have their primary search results, web pages or blog pages or other contents like videos or local listings are commonly shown and ranked according to the utility and validity of the website or blog, though it is fully based on the search engines that consider which pages or contents or videos or so forth are relevant and useful for the users or visitors.

In an Internet marketing strategy Search Engine Optimization is considered how a search engine works and why and what people generally search for. The main search keywords typed by the visitors or the users into a search engine and which search engine are mainly focus and do target the audiences. Search Engine Optimization is long term strategy, it is not a one day or two days task at all. Optimizing a website and boosting a website to get a higher rank is not a very easy task. It is time consuming and involve editing its content, HTML and incorporated with different codes grows its relevance to the specific keywords and to delete and reduce the hindrance to the indexing activities of search engines.
