An Introduction to Website or Web pages, Web portal and Directories

A website is also known as web site or often called site is a bunch of web pages generally work from a single web domain, where a web site or a site is hosted on a web server, at least one, reachable through a network like Internet or any private local area network (LAN), from end to end of an Internet address familiar with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). All reachable websites collectively comprised with the World Wide Web (www). A webpage is generally a document commonly written in a plain text distributed with formatting directions of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language). Web pages are retrieved and transferred with HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) to provide privacy for the purpose of user of the webpage content. A website’s pages can normally be retrieved from a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), generally called the web address.
Categories of Websites
Static Website
Generally there are two types of websites. One is Static website and the other is Dynamic website. A static website is one which has generally web pages keep in reserve in a format which is sent to a client web browser. These static web pages are generally coded in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are commonly used to manage and control the appearance of HTML. This kind of website generally shows the same information to all the visitors. Static websites normally show consistent level information for the purpose of long period of time.
Dynamic website
A dynamic website is one which can customizes or can changes at any time if required all the time. There are several softwares available for generating dynamic web sites, such as CGI, Java Servlets and Java Server Pages, Active Server Pages and ColdFusion. Many web application and web templates available for the purpose of using programming languages, such as PHP, Perl, Python etc. to build a rapid and dynamic website.
Web Portal
A web portal sometimes called a especial web page designed with several functions that brings information at the same time from different origins in a uniform way. Generally each of the sources of information gets its allocated place on the page for the purpose of displaying information; sometimes a user also can configure which one is to show. For instance of earlier public web portals AOL, Excite, Netvibes, iGoogle, MSN, Naver, Lycos, Indiatimes, Rediff and Yahoo!. Web portals are often differentiated as vertical and horizontal. A vertical portal is a special one which enters into the point to a specific market or interest. 

Types of Web Portals

Web portals are often separated as horizontal and vertical portals. A horizontal portal is mainly used as a platform to different companies in the same economic sector or same kind of producers or distributors. On the other hand a vertical portal is one of the specialized entry points to a particular industry or subject area or demand.

Directory

Directory can be referred to computing directory, service directory, political directory, business directory, telephone directory and web directory. Generally a directory is used for the purpose of organizing information of a specific type in a particular form, for instance a telephone directory. But a web directory is a subject guide, commonly organized by huge topics and subtopics. For instance, Yahoo is one of the famous web directories in the world (http://www.yahoo.com). At present time many other sites have been using a yahoo-like web directory including major portal sites.
